Amazon Studios grows into TV series; seem to be to load up on content for streaming

Amazon has had a content development division for some time but now it’s announced plans to expand from just the films to develop (and distribute through its Instant Video service), original comedy and children’s series. The new focus is the tournament that Netflix and Hulu that have both dived headlong development of original TV show-style content that mirrors the content consumers seem to GRAVITATE toward on streaming services. According to the press release,

Authors, animators and filmmakers around the world now invited comic and children’s series proposal

SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–(NASDAQ: AMZN)-Amazon.com, Inc. announced today that Amazon Studios expands its development work in comedy and children’s series. Amazon Studios is Amazon’s content development division that uses audience feedback to identify large, original entertainment customers will love. Starting today, calls the series creators to upload their proposals for comedy and children’s programming to Amazon Studios at http://studios.amazon.com/getting-started/series. The best comedy and children’s series will be distributed through the Amazon Instant Video, Amazon’s digital video streaming service.

“In developing films, we have heard a lot of interest from content creators who want to develop original comics in comedy and children genres. We are pleased to have authors, animators and directors the opportunity to develop original series.

Each month, Amazon Studios that the option of a promising new projects and add its development slate which is tested for profitability with an audience. If Amazon Studios choose to deploy a full-budget series, the creator will receive a $ 55,000 payment, up to 5% of the net proceeds from Amazon’s toy and t-shirt licensing, royalties, and other bonuses. Amazon Studios new series development is led by Joe Lewis, formerly with 20th Century Fox and Comedy Central, and Tara Sorensen, former National Geographic Kids.
